We had four club members competing in the Oceania MTB champs last week in Bright, Australia.

Josie Wilcox had a strong race to finish on the podium in 3rd place in Elite Women, just 50 seconds behind second and 4 minutes behind pro rider Rebecca O’Connell. Josie was the first Kiwi home and an unfortunate spill on the second lap probably cost her 2nd place, but she showed a lot of grit to fight her way back to 3rd.

Barry Wilson also made the podium in 3rd place in the Vet 5 Men and was only 1 minute behind the winner. Barry had a great start jumping up into third from back on the grid and putting in some pretty respectable lap times.

In the Under 19’s we had Max Taylor and Caleb Bottcher competing. Max rode strongly throughout the race and was in a group of four riders trying to bridge the gap to the lead rider. He finished 5th  and just 1.29 minutes behind the winner while gaining some valuable UCI points. Caleb was involved in a crash on the start line which saw him second to last after 50 metres but fought hard to finish in 10th and remarkably just 3 minutes behind 1st.

In the Under 17’s Adam Francis punctured part way through the second lap and with the tech zone at the other end of the course had a DNF. This was pretty unfortunate with him in the leading group of three and over 1.40 minutes ahead of 4th and looking very comfortable for a podium place that would have seen a Kiwi clean sweep.
